Para 18 - قَدْ اَفْلَحَ

سورة النور

بِسْمِ اللّٰهِ الرَّحْمٰنِ الرَّحِیْمِ

24.31

وَ قُلْ لِّلْمُؤْمِنٰتِ یَغْضُضْنَ مِنْ اَبْصَارِهِنَّ وَ یَحْفَظْنَ فُرُوْجَهُنَّ وَ لَا یُبْدِیْنَ زِیْنَتَهُنَّ اِلَّا مَا ظَهَرَ مِنْهَا وَ لْیَضْرِبْنَ بِخُمُرِهِنَّ عَلٰى جُیُوْبِهِنَّ۪-وَ لَا یُبْدِیْنَ زِیْنَتَهُنَّ اِلَّا لِبُعُوْلَتِهِنَّ اَوْ اٰبَآىٕهِنَّ اَوْ اٰبَآءِ بُعُوْلَتِهِنَّ اَوْ اَبْنَآىٕهِنَّ اَوْ اَبْنَآءِ بُعُوْلَتِهِنَّ اَوْ اِخْوَانِهِنَّ اَوْ بَنِیْۤ اِخْوَانِهِنَّ اَوْ بَنِیْۤ اَخَوٰتِهِنَّ اَوْ نِسَآىٕهِنَّ اَوْ مَا مَلَكَتْ اَیْمَانُهُنَّ اَوِ التّٰبِعِیْنَ غَیْرِ اُولِی الْاِرْبَةِ مِنَ الرِّجَالِ اَوِ الطِّفْلِ الَّذِیْنَ لَمْ یَظْهَرُوْا عَلٰى عَوْرٰتِ النِّسَآءِ۪-وَ لَا یَضْرِبْنَ بِاَرْجُلِهِنَّ لِیُعْلَمَ مَا یُخْفِیْنَ مِنْ زِیْنَتِهِنَّؕ-وَ تُوْبُوْۤا اِلَى اللّٰهِ جَمِیْعًا اَیُّهَ الْمُؤْمِنُوْنَ لَعَلَّكُمْ تُفْلِحُوْنَ(31)

Kanz-ul-Irfan

Command the Muslim women to lower their gaze, and protect their chastity, and to not reveal their adornment except that which is apparent itself,[1] and they should draw their headscarves over their chests, and they shouldnot reveal their adornment[2] except for their husbands or their fathers or their husbands’ fathers or their sons or their husbands’ sons or their brothers or their brothers’ sons or their sisters’ sons or their ˹Muslim˺ women or those ˹maidservants˺ whom they rightfully own or the servants among men who have no lust[3] or those children who are not aware of the veiled parts of women—and they should not stamp their feet so that their concealed adornment becomes known. Turn ˹in repentance˺ to Allah, O believers, in hope of succeeding.

Commentary

Muslim women have been commanded to not reveal those body parts in front of strange men which they adorn, like the head, ears, neck, for example. However, it is permitted to reveal body parts which are generally seen due to the difficulty of concealing them, such as the face, hands, and feet. Nevertheless, due to a surge of immodesty, unlawful gazing, and indecent thoughts in today’s age, the ruling is to cover the face too.

Meaning, the Muslim women should cover their hair, necks, jewellery and chests with their headscarves. It is stated in Ṣaḥīḥ Al-Bukhārī that when this verse was revealed, the female companions tore their sheets and covered themselves with them. (Ṣaḥīḥ Al-Bukhārī: 4758)

It is permitted for Muslim women to not conceal themselves from those male servants who do not have lust, for example, those who are elderly, free of lust and righteous. However, it is stipulated that they must veil themselves from those who do not fall into this category, regardless of how trustworthy they are, even if they have been servants from childhood. Veiling is generally not observed before house servants, chauffeurs, gardeners, milk-men; this is unlawful.
